Our school, Yagyū Shinkage Ryū, focuses on developing your body and mind to be strong, stable, and adaptive.
You get to enjoy the action of full-contact martial art in our Hyōhō sessions, where you develop reflexes and explosive strength. In our Battōjutsu sessions we train fast-draw techniques using the katana, wakizashi and jūjutsu techniques to build up our sense of precision, focus and our body's fine motor skills.
All throughout this regimen, you will learn how to show healthy respect to your comrades, whilst enjoying the thrill of learning how to master the way of the sword.
Our approach teaches both courage and restraint: the ability to strike with power when necessary and the discipline to await that crucial moment.
Unlike modern fencing, kendō, or European historical martial arts (HEMA), this is a living tradition of koryū (samurai age Japanese traditional martial arts). Unlike iaidō and the traditional schootyles sls connected thereto, we use full-contact training segments in its iai and tachiai training. It has been passed down in an unbroken line for over 450 years, taught by masters directly trained by the successors of the Yagyū Main Line.
The techniques you learn are not sport adaptations but the original methods samurai used to survive the harsh realities of Japan’s battlefields in the 1500's and 1600's. Every strike, movement and strategy has been refined through experience from both battlefield and duel combat - to attune your sword-hand as well as your mind to be adaptive and focussed.
